Ikea Ektorp Furniture Covers Update

A few months ago, I wrote this post out of frustration.  I tried to purchase new, white slipcovers for my Ikea Ektorp furniture, and all of the covers that were available at the store and online were yellowish and dingy – definitely not white.  grrrr…

Judging from the responses that I got to the post, I wasn’t the only one that was frustrated.

I still have not bought new covers (although I desperately need to!), but several of my readers have, so I thought that I’d share some of their experiences and tips to whiten the dingy slipcovers.  I have no idea why Ikea started selling them this way – maybe it saves them money by eliminating an extra wash or two?   Regardless of their reason – a warning would have been nice.  At least include a bit of information in the packaging or washing instructions – sheesh!

If you’ve recently purchased a yellowed cover, don’t despair – you can make it bright and white.

Several readers were able to whiten their covers by simply washing them a couple of times.

Most who had success recommended OxyClean added to the wash.  Chana – an awesome reader (with 5 little ones!) uses Arm and Hammer with OxyClean (OC is already in the detergent – kind of like Tide with bleach), and then adds more OxyClean.  With 5 kids, I consider her my expert on white cover cleaning!  She also washes them in warm water, which is something that I’ve been afraid to do because of shrinkage.  (I am going to try it though – as long as I get the covers back on when they’re still a little damp!  Warm water definitely cleans better.)

Her new covers turned out a beautiful sparkling white after 2 washes with her method.   She sent me some pictures…

The chair in the front has a new, unwashed cover on it.  You can see the difference, even though you can’t get the full idea of how blah-looking the covers are out of the box.  Trust me!

Here’s the chair cover after 2 wash cycles…

You can see that the cover is now just as white as the yummy bright-white throw.  She got it at TJ Maxx – I want one!

Chana is loving white and neutral spaces – I think she’s got a winner!  I totally want to curl up on that rug.  And those windows are killing me!  So pretty.

Thank you Chana, and everyone who shared their tips regarding the Ektorp covers.  You’ve all taught me so much.

Much love to you all!!!

What a shame about the slipcovers, Brenda. The Extorp sofa is/was so popular for so long, I know we looked at them. I love Oxy Clean for everything and that would have been my first choice, too. Last spring I used it on our beige outdoor furniture fabric and they came out like new. Just scrub and hose down!

Chana’s home is beautiful, and to think she is raising 5 children, it’s pristine!

Gee, I just bought an Extorp a couple weeks ago and got the white cover, I just looked and it doesn’t look yellow but maybe when I wash it for the first time I’ll notice a difference!

I can assure you its not always pristine. Laundry is like shoveling snow in a blizzard and its usually blows up once a week. We only moved here 6 months ago so we have a lot to do to organize better and I have lots of neat ideas and plans, one of which is the kitchen cabinets! Painting them white that is, And a new desk space. That is up and coming! I freaked when I pulled that new chair cover out of the package, Brenda is right its way creamier out of the package than it looks in the pics. It was almost a yellow white. Also the Ursula pillow case was a real linen unbleached color, I also Oxycleaned them and after 2 washes are much much lighter. I hang dry them.

  4. We had them on our IKEA sectional and I pretty much did the same wash/oxy thing. Putting them back on damp is key, otherwise you will pull a muscle trying to wrestle those things back on!

Do you like that sofa? Has it held up to wear and tear? Is it comfortable to sit on? I

I WONDER IF THID WILL WORK ON DROPCLOTHS , I TRIED BLEACHING MINE THE USING MISS MUSTARDSEEDS DIRECTIONS AND THERE WAS NOT A NOTICABLE COLOR CHANGE AT ALL….

    To Mommaof5 aka Chana-
That is a really nice chair/ottoman combo, what brand are they? Ikea or??? And does the otto
    have storage space?
    Thanks!

  8. Mommaof5 says:

Yes, they are Ektorp form Ikea. Bleach never worked for me. Only oxyclean added detergent and arm and hammer with oxy power packs. They are very comfy. We love them. The 2+2 is so nice we want one for our basement. There is storage in the foot stool.
